Beaches & Parks
While it could hardly be considered crowded, most of Bimini's beaches are found on the west side of North Bimini. The most-popular beach can be found in Alice Town off Queen's Highway, named Radio Beach. This quiet continuous stretch of sand is known by its three sections, Radio Beach, Blister Beach, and Spook Hill, which is next to a cemetery. You won't find any commercial water sports operations here, but the sun, sand, swimming and snorkeling are excellent. Those seeking a bit more privacy will find small but public beaches at some of the guest houses and beach clubs on North Bimini and South Bimini. You can also take a boat out to the Cays off Bimini, these beaches can be hard to reach but they are definately secluded.

Grand Bahama Island
Dining
RestaurantGrand Bahama
Grand Bahama Island has made significant contributions to Bahamian cooking. Roast conch, which can now be found all over the islands, was developed by Grand Bahamian chef Joe Billy (Billy Joe), then later achieved great exposure through Tony Macaroni, another local chef and character. "Crawfish," as it is called in the islands, or Spiny Lobster, is another major tradition. This clawless lobster is considered a delicacy, and is relatively plentiful in the surrounding waters. You'll find it on almost every menu.
For a unique cultural and dining experience, venture out to the Wednesday night "Fish Fry" at Smith's Point, an event that was started a number of years ago by the residents of that small town to help raise funds for their church. It has become so popular that similar fish fries are held in Nassau on New Providence Island. The Fish Fry is an excellent opportunity to get better acquainted with both the native fish and the local residents.
You'll also not want to miss the "Mini Crab Fest" held every Friday night at The Churchill Garden Bar next to the International Bazaar. The indigenous "land-crab" (primarily native to Andros island) is the main attraction here. Mr. Oscar Porter, the proprietor and a descendant from Andros, proudly serves up dishes like Andros Boiled Crab & Dough with Cassava, Andros Crab Soup and Andros Stuffed Crab. Accompaniments are their famous "Gully Wash" (a concoction of green coconut juice, sweetened milk and gin) and the music of a native Rake & Scrape band. The feast begins at 6:30 pm; be sure to get there early, as these delicacies often sell out quickly.

Beaches
Beaches & ParksGrand Bahama
Grand Bahama Island's rambling, reef-protected shoreline and cays are filled with numerous powdery white-sand beaches. The premier beach on the island is secluded Gold Rock Beach, which is a must-see at low tide when it unfolds its signature "welcome mat."
You can generally find two kinds of beaches on Grand Bahama Island, the "activity beach" and the "secluded beach." Each is captivating for its own reasons.
At the activity beaches, you'll find a multitude of fun and games, including, but not limited to, jet skiing, snorkeling, and windsurfing.
Half the fun of secluded beaches is discovering them. The best hunting grounds are on the southwest and southeast sides of the island. Following the main highway either west or east, you'll come across miles of empty sand soon enough.
Lucayan National Park
Beaches & Parks (National Park)Grand Bahama
Upland forests, rare flower species, mangrove creeks, and a magnificent beach in this 40-acre national park provide an unparalleled glimpse into the complexities of the Grand Bahamian environment.
Lucayan National Park, established in 1982, is the only place where you can see all six of the islands' ecosystems. It is also home to one of the world's longest underwater system of limestone caves, which is also among the most environmentally distinct. The vast tunnel system, accessible by both land and sea, was created over eons by the seepage of acidified rainwater into the island's limestone base.
The caves served as a burial ground of the now-extinct Lucayan people. In one cave, with a small surface opening on top of a submerged talus cone, the remains of several Lucayan Indians were found. The site has been considerably disturbed, so that it is impossible to tell whether the Indians were ritually buried or whether they met a violent end.
The Lucayans were cousins of the Taino/Arawaks and practiced skull deformation in infancy which writers have suggested was to make them appear more handsome. The bones belong to adults, the skull to a 1˝ year old child and the post cranial bones to a six-year-old child. A solitary bead from a necklace was found with the bones. The Lucayan Indian bones recovered from the Lucayan Caverns have been replaced in their original positions as found underwater.
After exploring the caves, you'll want to stroll the trails through native pines, cross the tidal creek on a wooden boardwalk, and at the end, discover Gold Rock Beach. It is the perfect spot to relax, swim or enjoy a picnic lunch.
Peterson Cay National Park
Beaches & Parks (National Park)Grand Bahama
One mile off the southern shore of Grand Bahama Island lies 1˝-acre Peterson Cay, one of the smallest National Parks in The Islands of The Bahamas. Access to Peterson Cay is by boat only. Boaters must use care and anchor only in sandy areas away from coral reefs.
Sparsely vegetated with low scrub, this windswept limestone island is the only cay on Grand Bahama Island's leeward shore. Shady areas are scarce and visitors are advised to wear hats, sunscreen and bring drinking water. A sandy white beach on the north side provides boat access and is excellent for swimming and sunbathing. Peterson Cay is a perfect getaway spot for picnics and relaxation.
Protected park area includes the cay as well as the surrounding one-quarter mile of marine environment. The waters surrounding the park are filled with shallow bars and coral reefs, especially west of the cay, which make for excellent snorkeling and diving. Amongst coral blends and sunken rocks, swimmers are able to observe schools of tropical fish, Elkhorn and soft corals, sea fans, sunken rocks and an occasional manta ray or barracuda.
The Rand Nature Center
Beaches & Parks (National Park)Grand Bahama
The Rand Nature Center was named for James H. Rand, a renowned philanthropist of Freeport, who died in 1968. The 100-acre sanctuary was the first education nature center to be established in The Islands of The Bahamas and its goal is to preserve the natural Grand Bahamian habitat as a heritage for future generations.
Located only minutes from downtown Freeport, the Rand Nature center is Grand Bahama Island's most accessible national park. Most people come to the Rand Nature Center to see its prized West Indian flamingos -- the national bird of the Islands of the Bahamas. The birds nest and mill around a pond located about a half-mile inside the park. Other birds are also plentiful, including Antillean Peewee birds, Red-legged Thrushes, Stripe-headed Tanagers, the endangered Bahama Parrot and, occasionally, a Kirtland's Warbler.
Along the nature trail that winds through the park, at least 130 Bahamian plants have been identified, which are just as fascinating as the birds. The Whiskbroom Fern, for instance, is believed to have been the first plant in the world to stand upright. Many other species became very useful in the daily lives of early Grand Bahamians: Uniola, a springy grass, was used to stuff mattresses; the sharp-pointed Agave leaves served as needles and threads; and Love Vine is a powerful aphrodisiac.
The Rand Nature Center has a Gift Shop, featuring local art, books, nature jewelry and gifts. Educational exhibits include island ecology, plants and their uses, cultural and natural history of Grand Bahama Island.
The Nature Center is open for self-guided tours, 9am - 4 pm, Monday - Friday, and is closed on Saturday and Sunday. It also provides educational tours and is a great resource facility for ecological subjects. Among its programmes geared to school children is "Adopt An Animal For Your Class," which helps children to learn above native animals and assist in conservation efforts.
The Heritage Trail
Historical SiteGrand Bahama
Before 1955, the main transportation artery on Grand Bahama Island was the Old Freetown Road, a dirt path leading from Old Freetown in the East to Eight Mile Rock and other settlements in the West. After the foundation of Freeport brought in a modern highway, the old road was abandoned and left to nature. Eventually, nature did such a good job of reclaiming it that a stretch of the road near Freetown has become one of the island's chief nature walks. Along the easy, five-mile trek are over 30 species of plants, 18 kinds of birds, 7 species of butterfly, and what remains of "The Hermitage," the oldest intact building on Grand Bahama, dating back to 1901. You'll also see remnants of the early settlement and a cemetery.

The design for the International Bazaar, which opened in 1967, was the brainchild of a motion picture special effects expert from California.
This 10-acre complex comprises shops, restaurants, snack/ice cream stores, beauty parlours and a barber shop. A multinational-themed shopping center, the Bazaar is divided into sections, representing different parts of the world (Africa Section, India Section, Oriental Section, French Section, South American Section, etc.). Many of the shops offer great deals on goods imported from their "mother regions." Rolex watches, French perfume, fine leather, and premium cigars are some of the items you can find.
Some of the places you might want to stop in: Jeweler's Warehouse, Oasis and Colombian Emeralds International.
The International Bazaar also has a Straw Market, where you can pick up local arts and crafts, and a perfume factory, where you can make and name your own fragrance.

The Islands Of The Bahamas invite exploration from the air as well as the sea. Skies are gorgeous and clear with the weather being "severe clear" nearly every day of the year. Puffy cumulus clouds generally dot the island skies at around 2,500' in the morning, if at all, rising to 7,500' in the afternoon. High ceilings and excellent visibility are the norm. It is advisable to check with the airports for availability and prices. Use the information provided to plan the details of your flight itinerary.

St. John's Anglican Church is the oldest religious foundation in The Bahamas. When "The Eleutheran Adventurers" came in 1647 and they migrated to Harbour Island, it is assumed that their descendants would have been living here when this church was erected. Its pink and white building dates back to 1768, and the Loyalists worshiped here as early as the mid-1700's.

Beaches and Parks
Beaches and Parks (Beaches)Inagua
The emerald and turquoise waters of The Bahamas archipelago naturally form breathtaking beaches. Seclusion. Activity. Countless meandering miles of sand, white or pink. Where ocean meets land here, the possible rewards are genuinely endless.
Beaches and Parks
Beaches and Parks (Birding)Inagua
More than 80,000 West Indian Flamingos, national bird of The Bahamas, reside in the Inagua National Park, which makes up almost half of Great Inagua Island. In the 1950's it was thought that the West Indian Flamingo might become extinct in The Bahamas because their numbers were so few and were still declining. With the help of the National Audubon Society in the United States, the creation of the Bahamas National Trust and the appointment of park wardens, the Inagua population has grown.
Flamingos are still an endangered species, even though their numbers are now impressive. It is illegal to harm or capture this bird under the Bahamas Wild Bird (Protection) Act. The Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES) lists the West Indian Flamingo in Appendix H, which means that they are threatened and stand to become endangered. During late summer, autumn and winter the Flamingos fly off to Cuba, Hispaniola and the northern Bahama islands of Abaco and Andros.
Bahama Parrots can also be found on Great Inagua. But, unlike their Abaco cousins, they live in the coppice areas, nesting in cavities in large, hollow Lignum vitae, Mahogany and Black Mangrove trees.
Other exotic birds on the island include pelicans, herons, egrets, and Bahama pintail ducks.
Bahamian Rock Iguana
Beaches and Parks (Ecotourism)Inagua
The Bahamian Rock Iguana (or large lizard), from which Inagua gets its name, is quite prevalent in these islands. They are usually some shade of brown, most are two and a half to three feet long, and they can live for up to forty years. There are three known species -- Cyclura cychlura, Cyclura carinata, and Cyclura rileyi -- and seven subspecies of Rock Iguanas in The Bahamas. Subspecies of Rock iguanas are found on Andros, San Salvador, Acklins, Mayaguana, and in the Exuma Cays. All rock iguanas in The Bahamas are protected by the Wild Animals (Protection) Act. At present, The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists all Bahamian populations of rock iguanas as "rare." The Convention for International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) list the rock iguana in Appendix I meaning the species is near extinction or very endangered. All international trade is prohibited among CITES signatory nations.
Little Inagua
Beaches and ParksInagua
Little Inagua, designated a National Park by the Bahamas Government in 2002, is the largest uninhabited island in the Wider Caribbean and exists in a REMOTE, natural undisturbed state. It is a documented nesting location for critically endangered sea turtle species. Its surrounding waters contribute to the supply of fisheries eggs, larvae, and sub-adults that are swept into the remaining Bahamian marine territory. Park designation includes the marine area to 100 fathoms, increasing the percentage of marine ecosystem under protection for fisheries replenishment purposes. Approximate area: 31,000 acres (not including marine area).

Columbus Harbour
Beaches & Parks (Activity Beach)Long Island
Northern Long Island This one-mile, completely protected, shallow inner bay is great for children; plus there are two further half-mile outer beaches, featuring coral heads and often good shelling, superb snorkeling at end of the inner bay and off both outer bays. For snorkeling, fair weather is required. Christopher Columbus is said to have rowed into this bay on his first New World voyage!
Deal's Beach
Beaches & Parks (Activity Beach)Long Island
This beach is located along the island's main road (no traffic problems). It is 2 miles long, with a beautiful shallow bay, great for beach walking, wading, swimming, snorkeling and sailing on 'Sunfish' type boats. There is also a barbeque grill, a picnic table and benches. Pine trees provide lots of shade.
Cape Santa Maria Bay and Beach
Beaches & Parks (Secluded Beach)Long Island
Northern Long Island This is unquestionably one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, with pure-white, powdery sand, stretching about three miles. Cape Santa Maria is at the island's northern tip, about 15 minutes from Stella Maris, and was named by Christopher Columbus for one of his ships. The beach is in a protected bay that faces northwest. It is mostly calm and, even with strong inland winds, it is still swimmable and enjoyable. Towards its western end, there are three snorkel areas right off the beach: a mild shallow sea garden; shallow rock/low coral formations around the final western rock-point; and "Rainbow Reef," a very pretty shore rock and coral reef, ideal for snorkelers in fair weather. There are also outer reefs and coral heads. A beach reserve and cabana provides shelter from the sun. Complimentary transportation to the beach is provided for guests staying at Stella Maris Resort .
Love Beaches
Beaches & Parks (Secluded Beach)Long Island
A beautiful large, perfect 'nature swimming pool', completely protected except in severe weather - great for children of all ages. Pretty 'miniature' snorkeling. Continuing South: Plus 6 more beaches, average length each 1/3 - 1/2 mile - mostly open, with some partially protected coves, some occasional outer rocks, all allowing bathing, swimming and snorkeling off the beach in calm weather. Pink coarse sand. All great for beachcombing! Usually completely secluded.
Millerton's School Beach
Beaches & Parks (Secluded Beach)Long Island
This beach is located on the West Coast (leeside) about 10 minutes from Stella Maris. It has a secluded bay, lots of small shells, yellow/white soft sand and is about 1 mile long. A small island, just 200 yards off shore, has shallow water and is perfect for snorkeling - great for children of all ages.

Christ Church Cathedral
ChurchesNassau
While sun, sea and sand are the main draws for tourists in The Bahamas, some visitors take the time to explore historical churches. Many are surprised to discover the history of Christ Church Cathedral, a massive Gothic Revival Building on the corner of King and George Streets. The present church stands on the site of the first Christ Church Cathedral, which was built in 1670. It was destroyed by fire in 1648 by invading Spanish. A second church was built on the site in 1693, however, the Spanish invaded again eight years later, destroying the church and a nearby fishing village. In 1721, a third church was constructed of wood, under the leadership of The Bahamas first royal governor, Woods Rogers. The fourth church, of stone, was later constructed on the site in 1754. The foundation stone of today's church was laid in 1837. In the following decades the cathedral was battered by hurricanes, especially during the 1920s, and extensive repairs were made. The church was again damaged in the Bay Street fire of 1942. However, Christ Church Cathedral still stands as an impressive structure and has hosted services attended by Queen Elizabeth II and other visiting heads of state. The Cathedral features an extensive collection of stained-glass windows. The main window, located over the altar, depicts the crucifixion of Chris. Plaques on the cathedral's walls memorialize some of New Providence notable citizens.
St Andrew's Presbyterian Kirk
ChurchesNassau
The second oldest church in New Providence, the "Kirk", a Scottish term for "church", was founded by the St Andrew's Society in 1798, however its foundation stone wasn't laid until 1810. According to minister Rev Alastair Gray the church gets a number of visits from tourist of all nationalities. They can appreciate that it's such a very old building. They can see memorials to founding Scottish families and the plain white walls make the stained glass windows really stand out. The Church is normally closed during the day, but if an attendant is present, visitors can go in and have a look.
St Francis Xavier Cathedral
ChurchesNassau
Located on West Hill Street opposite the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas, it is the first Roman Catholic church built in The Bahamas. The foundation stone was laid in 1885 and in 1887 it was consecrated by the Archbishop of New York Michael A Corrigan. Today's St Francis Xavier Cathedral features a blend of two buildings, the original church and a new addition which was completed in late 2003.
